Inclusion and Diversity Policy
1. Statement of Commitment
Engineering Minds is committed to building an inclusive, respectful and equitable learning environment where all children, staff, volunteers and families feel valued. We actively celebrate diversity in all its forms, including ethnicity, gender, disability, neurodiversity, sexual orientation, religion and socio-economic background. We believe that engineering and science thrive through collaboration across different perspectives and lived experiences.
2. Purpose
This policy outlines our commitment to ensuring equal access, participation and representation within all aspects of our club. It reflects our dedication to removing barriers, addressing discrimination and promoting fairness, dignity and mutual respect. This policy also fulfils our legal duties under the Equality Act 2010. Engineering Minds is committed to making reasonable adjustments to ensure children with disabilities or additional learning needs can access and participate fully in our provision.
3. Scope
This policy applies to all individuals involved in Engineering Minds, including children, parents or carers, staff, volunteers, mentors, partners and visitors.
4. Our Principles
- We design and deliver curricula that intentionally celebrate diversity, promote cultural awareness and highlight the achievements of individuals from underrepresented communities.
- We collaborate with SENCO specialists from our partner schools to create accessible and inclusive learning environments tailored to the needs of every child.
- We are committed to making reasonable adjustments, in line with the Equality Act 2010, to support children with disabilities and additional needs so they can take part in our activities. If a child usually receives one-to-one support at school, we will work closely with parents and carers to discuss what is possible within the club environment and agree the most appropriate way forward.
- We challenge stereotypes and promote positive role models, particularly in STEM fields where many groups are historically underrepresented.
- We maintain a zero-tolerance approach to discrimination, bullying or harassment of any kind.
- We ensure that our activities and resources are reflective of the diverse communities we serve, particularly within the Royal Borough of Greenwich.
- We provide staff and volunteers with guidance and support to uphold these values.
5. Our Initiatives in Practice
We embed inclusion and diversity into our programming through:
- Curriculum Development: Our projects include a curriculum that celebrates the contributions of Black African and Caribbean engineers and scientists in the UK. This initiative is supported by BH365 and aims to inspire children aged 7–14, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds, to consider careers in STEM.
- Community Engagement: We work in partnership with community organisations and schools to reach children who may not otherwise access engineering education.
- Inclusive Role Modelling: We involve tutors, engineers and researchers from diverse backgrounds who share their experiences with children, fostering connection and aspiration.
- Girl-Focused Programmes: Through our “Girls’ Impact on Engineering” programme, we focus on empowering girls aged 11–14 to explore the impact of engineering in their local community and consider future careers in the field.
- SEN Inclusion: We work closely with schools’ Special Educational Needs Coordinators to support children with additional needs, ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive.
6. Monitoring and Evaluation
We regularly review our materials, projects and practices to ensure they remain inclusive and relevant. Feedback is welcomed from children, families, schools and community partners. This policy will be reviewed annually, or sooner where necessary, to reflect evolving needs and standards.
7. Reporting and Contact
Concerns relating to inclusion, discrimination or accessibility should be raised promptly with the Club Coordinator or the Designated Safeguarding Lead. We are committed to resolving such issues sensitively and in line with our safeguarding and complaints procedures.
