KHALID OLOWE-MAKORIE

JUNIOR MENTOR

"Programming is a great skill that I believe everyone should be entitled to try. It enables you to channel your creativity and imagination into all sorts of things, from writing a script that says “Hello World” to creating apps and entire virtual worlds. From a young age I was desperate to build as much as I possibly could especially with Lego, so to be able share this passion with others within ENGINEERING MINDS and inspire them to take on this rapidly expanding field of Computing is fantastic.

Since I was eight years old I’ve had a passion for creating and programming. Initially it was just a hobby, as I saw games as fun and appealing and merely wished to emulate that excitement. However by the age of twelve I realised I did indeed have a true passion for programming and thus began to take it more seriously and create games that not only did I enjoy but that were targeted at specific audiences. From there I began working on other projects outside game creation such as general tools for everyday life and robotics, which ultimately led to me pursuing Computer Science at school that I know now study at a higher level as part of the International Baccalaureate.

I am a self-taught programmer and have knowledge of Matlab, Java, Python, C*, C++. Over the years I have entered many game developing competitions for example the Bafta YGD(2014,2016), Indie game making competition(2015), GDWC(2016) and the KoduCup(2012), though I was not the victor I did acquire many transferable skills I will use throughout life and pass onto others. On July 5th 2016 I also released my first ever mobile game on the Google play store. I believe this to be my greatest achievement so far due to the sheer difficulty I had to overcome in order to produce such a thing. Furthermore during the summer of 2016 also I completed a Pennsylvania University Robotics (Coursera) course online and passed with 93.9%, which I am also extremely proud about as the course was immensely challenging but enjoyable nonetheless."
